After a big build-up to a final decision, the Broward County Commission on Tuesday evening voted unanimously to put off for two months a decision on whether to let Waste Management supersize its Monarch Hill landfill to a height of 325 feet – 20 feet higher than the Statue of Liberty.

Waste Management’s attempt to corral Coconut Creek’s longstanding opposition to expanding the mountainous, odoriferous Monarch Hill landfill with offers of cash and environmental incentives fell flat Monday afternoon when city commissioners voted unanimously to reject it.

Q Link Wireless CEO Issa Asad and his company pleaded guilty on Oct.15 in Miami federal court to bilking more than $100 million from a government program that provides free or discounted phone service to people in need. The sentence prosecutors are recommending: five years, which is equal to one year for every $20 million he stole.
Ten years earlier, while the feds say Asad was in the middle of committing his enormous fraud, he got an even better deal in Broward Circuit Court.

To dump, nor not to dump. That is the question.
At 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, giant Waste Management will ask the Broward County Commission to alter the county’s land use designation on the site of a decommissioned waste-to-energy plant on company property that could provide it with 24.2 acres of new dumping ground adjacent to its towering Monarch Hill landfill in North Broward.
