Update Oct. 12 – Broward Sheriff’s employees, including sworn deputies and civilians, began turning themselves in this morning to face impending federal fraud charges involving the theft of hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of dollars in loans from the COVID-19 Paycheck Protection Program. Dozens of BSO employees are expected to be indicted later today. Federal prosecutors have scheduled a press conference for this afternoon. -

Last week, Gov. Ron DeSantis asked the Florida Supreme Court to impanel a statewide Grand Jury to investigate “crimes and wrongdoing committed against Floridians related to the COVID-19 vaccine.” But if the 18 grand jurors and the prosecutors who will shepherd them do an actual investigation, the governor’s request should backfire unpleasantly on him and his apparent hopes for higher political office. -

Pinecrest to use COVID relief millions to connect hundreds of properties to Miami-Dade water system

Village of Pinecrest officials are ramming through an $11.4-million proposal that would connect roughly 700 properties that currently use water wells to the Miami-Dade water system. To pay for most of the project, the village council recently authorized using $7.5 million in COVID-19 relief funds from the federal government. Affected homeowners would pay the balance…
