For decades, safety regulators and the auto industry have known that even in a moderate speed rear-end crash a driver or front seat passenger can slide out of the seat belt and be launched headfirst into the backseat, badly injuring a backseat passenger or being paralyzed or killed himself. Since the 1990s, authorities have instructed parents to put young children in the backseat to avoid injury from an inflating airbag. But critics say they have failed to provide another crucial piece of information: Due to the risk of seat failure in a rear collision, the safest place for a child is behind an unoccupied seat, or else behind the lightest person in the front.

Acting Broward Health President/CEO Kevin Fusco apparently exceeded his spending authority last month when he signed a deal to pay more than $400,000 in hush money to a district executive who was fired after publicly criticizing a proposed $71.4 million, no-bid advertising contract. The same day, Fusco signed a second deal to pay another Broward Health Medical Center $537,000 to go away quietly.

An oncology company financially connected to Gov. Rick Scott got a no-bid contract four years ago from taxpayer-supported Broward Health for as long as 25 years – an unprecedented term. Scott was an investor in a private equity firm that owns 21st Century Oncology, state records show.
