Not only was she the first black woman to become a judge in the Southern District of Florida, Cooke was also widely respected for her evenhandedness in court. Yet for ex-congressman David Rivera, Cooke’s departure is an opportunity.

Just in time for Halloween, “zombie” campaign cash is baaaack. Retired eight-term Florida Congressman Ander Crenshaw has agreed to cough up thousands of dollars to settle civil charges that for up to two years after leaving office he used donated money from his zombie campaign account to pay for luxury hotel stays, meals and other personal expenses.

In a ruling that undermines an 81-year-old anti-corruption law prohibiting pay-to-play political contributions by federal contractors, an impotent Federal Election Commission last week disclosed that it allowed Boca Raton private prison contractor The GEO Group to get away with making hundreds of thousands of dollars of otherwise illegal contributions to Super PACs.
