In December 2015, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s office cut a secret antitrust deal with Waste Management that allowed it to complete its big money acquisition of Southern Waste Systems and Sun Recycling, including Sun’s Broward recycling facilities. In the six years before, as Bondi campaigned for election and re-election, Waste Management contributed more than $150,000 to the Republican Party of Florida, Gov. Rick Scott and Bondi.

Last month, Sunrise City Manager Richard Salamon fired off an ominous email to more than two dozen of his fellow municipal managers across Broward. The subject: solid waste disposal and single stream recycling. The urgent message: “most of us are facing the reality we don’t have anyone lined up to accept our recyclables in 2 ½ months.” That’s as of July 3.

UPDATE : Thursday, April 14 — Suspended Broward Health Chairman David Di Pietro today announced his resignation for the hospital district’s board of directors. He offered no explanation. On Monday, a judge ordered Gov. Rick Scott to reinstate Di Pietro. Scott has appealed that ruling.
