Many shed a tear when Miami federal judge Marcia Cooke died after a bout with cancer on Jan. 27. Not only was she the first black woman to become a judge in the Southern District of Florida, Cooke was also widely respected for her evenhandedness in court. Yet for ex-congressman David Rivera, Cooke’s departure is an opportunity.

A split federal appeals court largely denied Florida Bulldog’s effort to compel the FBI to open up additional files about 9/11 after concluding that the public interest in knowing what happened is outweighed by the privacy interests of suspects, witnesses and FBI investigators.
